At Friendly Paws Pet Resort, we prioritize the comfort of all our furry guests, especially during the colder months. For short-haired dogs, we kindly ask that you provide a coat or sweater for outdoor play during daycare and boarding. This extra layer helps keep them warm while they enjoy their time outside, ensuring they stay comfortable and happy during their stay with us, even in chilly weather.

When temperatures drop and the days get shorter, it’s tempting to settle into a cozy, indoor routine. But just like us, dogs need regular exercise and mental stimulation—even in winter. Staying active helps maintain your dog’s physical health, reduces anxiety, and prevents weight gain. Here are some creative ways to keep your pup engaged and energized throughout the chilly months.
Bundle Up and Embrace the Outdoors Many dogs love exploring in cooler weather, and with the right preparation, winter walks can still be fun! - Dress Appropriately: Short-haired or small dogs may benefit from a warm coat or sweater. If it’s snowy or icy, consider dog boots to protect their paws from cold and salt.
- Shorter but More Frequent Walks: If it’s too cold for long walks, break up your pup’s exercise with several shorter outings throughout the day.
- Choose Sunny Hours: Midday walks, when the sun is out and temperatures are slightly warmer, can be more comfortable for both of you.
Play Indoor Games If it’s too cold to venture outside, there are still plenty of ways to keep your dog active indoors. - Tug-of-War: A classic game that engages your dog’s muscles and instincts.
- Fetch with a Soft Toy: A hallway or living room can make an excellent mini-fetch field.
- Climb the Stairs: Toss a toy or treat to the top of the stairs and encourage your pup to run after it. This low-impact game is great for burning energy.
Teach New Tricks or Reinforce Old CommandsWinter is the perfect time to focus on training. Learning new skills provides mental stimulation and strengthens the bond between you and your dog. - Teach New Tricks: Practice fun commands like “spin,” “roll over,” or even “high five.”
- Work on Leash Manners and Recall: Reinforcing good behavior will make future outdoor adventures more enjoyable.
Plan Playdates or Visit Dog-Friendly Indoor Spaces Social interaction and new environments help prevent boredom and encourage exercise. - Doggy Daycare: This is a great way for your dog to socialize and burn energy. At Friendly Paws, we offer a heated indoor area where dogs can safely play with their daycare buddies!
- Pet-Friendly Stores: Some stores welcome dogs, giving them a new environment to explore with you.
- Organize Playdates: Arrange meetups with other dogs to keep your pup active and entertained.
Use Mental Stimulation as Exercise Not all exercise needs to be physical—mental stimulation can be just as tiring for your dog. - Interactive Toys: Puzzle toys, treat-dispensing balls, and snuffle mats offer mental engagement that helps tire your pup.
- Scent Games: Hide treats around the house and encourage your dog to sniff them out, tapping into their natural instincts.
Keeping your dog active during the winter may require a bit more creativity, but the rewards are well worth it. A well-exercised dog is healthier, happier, and less likely to develop behavioral issues from boredom. Whether you brave the cold together or create fun indoor activities, the key is consistency. With these strategies, your pup will stay engaged, active, and content all winter long!
