Tip of the Month

As the temperature rises, it’s essential to ensure our furry friends stay cool and comfortable like Riley. Dogs are more susceptible to heat than humans. Here are some effective ways to keep your dog cool during hot summer months.

  • Pools
    • A small kiddie pool can help your dog stay cool on hot summer days. Fill it with cool water and let your pup splash around. It’s a fun way to lower their body temperature. Always supervise your dog while they’re in the pool to ensure their safety.
  • Sunscreen
    • Just like humans, dogs can get sunburned, especially those with short hair or light-colored coats. Apply pet-safe sunscreen to sensitive areas like the nose, ears, and belly.
  • Lots of Water
    • Hydration is crucial during the summer. Ensure your dog has access to fresh, cool water at all times. Consider placing multiple water bowls around your home and yard. If you’re on the go, bring a portable water bowl and water for your pup.
  • Ice Pops
    • Treat your dog to homemade ice pops. Simply freeze dog-safe ingredients like fruits and vegetables in ice cube trays. These frozen treats not only cool them down but also provide a tasty snack. Always check that the ingredients are safe for dogs.
  • Hot Ground
    • Pavement and sand can get extremely hot and burn your dog’s paws. Before heading out for a walk, check the ground temperature with your hand. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Opt for early morning or late evening walks when the ground is cooler, or walk on grassy areas to protect their paws.
  • Cooling Mat or Towel
    • Invest in a cooling mat for your dog to lounge on. These products are designed to stay cool for extended periods and can be placed in your dog’s favorite resting spots. You can also dampen a towel with cool water and let your dog lie on it for a refreshing break from the heat.
  • Leave Pup at Home
    • As much as your dog loves accompanying you, sometimes it’s best to leave them at home, especially on extremely hot days. Cars can heat up quickly, even with the windows cracked, leading to dangerous and potentially fatal conditions for your dog. Ensure they are left in a cool, shaded area with plenty of water if you leave them home alone.
  • Frequent Brushing
    • Regular grooming is essential during the summer. Brushing your dog frequently helps remove excess fur and promotes better air circulation through their coat. For double-coated breeds, consult with our groomer sam@fpgrooming.com about appropriate summer grooming techniques to keep them comfortable without compromising their natural insulation.

Keeping your dog cool in the summer requires a bit of extra effort, but it’s well worth it to ensure their health and happiness. Remember to always monitor your dog for signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy, and contact your vet if you suspect heatstroke. Stay cool and have a fantastic summer with your furry friend!

Parking Lot Rules: Ensuring a Safe and Friendly Environment for All

We have a few important rules to follow to keep our parking lot safe for everyone:

  • Dogs Always on Leash
    • To ensure the safety of all our visitors, please always keep your dogs on a leash. Even though your pup may be friendly, we have nervous and leash-reactive dogs that come in for boarding. An unfamiliar dog approaching them may cause issues.
  • Wait for Other Owners and Dogs to Finish
    • If you see another owner and their dog in the parking lot or at the gate, give them the time to make sure their dog is secured by staff, or they are back in their vehicle. This helps to ensure that everyone can move safely and comfortably.
  • Don’t Approach Other Dogs in the Lot
    • While it might be tempting to greet every dog you see, please avoid approaching other dogs in the parking lot. Some dogs might be nervous or afraid of strangers, and approaching them could cause stress or fear.
  • Drive Slowly
    • With our small parking lot and the blind spot pulling around the corner, it is essential that cars move slowly to avoid any accidents.
By following these simple rules, you can help us maintain a safe environment for our furry friends and their humans!
